I read the book about St Bernard''s family several yrs ago and, ever since, have prayed not just to him but to his whole family for my fam. I esp like the story of the older brothers telling the youngest that they were living the whole family estate to him while go off to the monastery. He told them something like, "So you''re living me with perishable goods so you can take the imperishable?" Any boy who could come up with a response like that had pretty remarkable parents.

His hymn, "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded," is one of the most moving works I''ve ever read.

I''m not the Pope''s personal preacher, but I also fully endorse Martin''s "Fulfillment of All Desire." It is one of those books that you can attack with pen and highlighter then go back to throughout the years. For instance, on page 168 he notes St. Bernard''s take on why God might withdraw us from consolation in prayer: There are times though when it is withdrawn, not because of pride already present, but because of pride that will occur unless it is withdrawn.

That''s the type of thing someone could experience and then struggle with for a long time. Thanks be to God that the saints give us hope in the midst of our wanderings!

Too many gems!
